MADEIRA ISLAND
If you are thinking of a trip to Portugal, it is worth treating yourself to a long stop on the beautiful Atlantic island which, rightly, is also called the "floating garden".
The archipelago of which it is part is made up of 8 islands, Madeira and Porto Santo are the only two inhabited.
The island of Madeira enjoys a mild climate all year round . In this archipelago where it is always spring, the autumn season is perhaps the best time to visit: it is considerably milder than the Azores islands and the rains are less frequent; the months of October and November are also much cheaper crowded than the high season and in the city and on the beaches you will not find crowds of summer season tourists.
It is worth visiting for its uncontaminated landscapes, its paradisiacal beaches, mountains and villages.

Madeira is the perfect island for those who love trekking , you can choose from numerous excursions and trekking routes. The island is full of mountain paths, but the most memorable routes are found on the levades , the particular irrigation canals built in Madeira starting from the sixteenth century that cross the basaltic mass of the island to transport water from north to south of the island.

Climb up to Pico de Ruivo to enjoy the spectacular panorama of the island or take the 25 springs trek which will take you to a magical world of waterfalls, woods and lush nature in a three-hour walk.

Another beautiful path is the one on the coast of São Jorge , a route carved into the rock of about 3 km. The ideal time for trekking in Madeira is in October and November when the temperatures are decidedly milder than in the previous months.

But that's not all, the island is a gastronomic paradise , especially for those who love fruit, fresh fish and good wine.
It is worth tasting the small island bananas, chestnuts or tropical fruits such as guava or cherimoya. If you love fish and seafood, try the knifefish fillets or the tuna steaks with a side of crunchy fried corn, the octopus and seafood (patella and littorina).
Have a cold Coral (the lager beer produced on the island) and a portion of limpets served as an aperitif, you won't regret it. The most famous market where you can taste these delicacies is the Mercado dos Lavradores in Funchal.
In Madeira there is wine . On the island you will find many vineyards, especially in the areas of Funchal, Estreito Câmara de Lobos, Ribeira Brava, Porto da Cruz, São Vicente and Ribeira Janela. You can walk through the vineyards, visit the cellars, take tasting tours and take part in the harvest.
The season normally begins in late summer, but can last into October and November.

Madeira is the perfect island for surfers . Winter is the best time to go surfing in Portugal, but autumn still offers good opportunities to find perfect waves especially on the western and south-western coasts; that doesn't mean you won't find good waves on the island of Porto Santo too.
