Dozens of abandoned pets appear on the doors of local RSPCA charity branches each month, looking for a place to call home forever.

It's difficult to see so many animals being left unwanted and if we could, we'd take them all. The RSPCA is the UK's largest animal welfare charity that helps to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome neglected and abandoned animals.

The best pet for you based on your zodiac sign

Choosing a pet is not a decision to be taken lightly. You'll need to make sure you'll be sharing your home with an animal that suits your lifestyle, available space, and even your personality type. Naturally aloof people might not want to be constantly hounded for canine kisses, just as cuddly types might be affronted by some cat breeds' haughtiness or a lizard's lack of overt affection.

    • There are a number of dogs, cats, rabbits and horses on the charity's register at the moment and many are based in the county. There are hundreds of dogs across the country that are being cared for by the RSCPA.

    Many of the animals in the charity's care have never experienced life in a loving, family home. Here are a few of the dogs and cats that are being cared for by the RSPCA and are looking for their forever home, listed on the charity's website in Cumbria and Lancashire

    Reggie

    Reggie is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier crossbreed he is just three years old and currently housed at the Preston Animal Centre. The RSPCA's website says: "He loves his walks & playing with toys, so much so that he just can’t help himself from unstuffing his teddys. A good game of fetch with his much-loved tennis balls is a good way to bond with him. When things get all to exciting, he can get a little bit snatchy with his toys and food.

    Reggie is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier crossbreed he is just three years old and currently housed at the Preston Animal Centre © RSPCA "Reggie is our special lad who unfortunately has been at our centre for a whole year awaiting his case to be complete, and is now ready for his forever home. He is such a sweet and loving boy with plenty of energy and a bucket load of charater. He will definetly make a great addition to a family."

    Maestro

    This cute little pup was taken into care because his previous owner could no longer provide the care he needed. He is currently being cared for at Longview Kennels.

    The RSPCA's website says: "Maestro has found himself in our care as his previous owner could no longer provide the care he needed. He is a friendly and playful pup once he gets to know you however can be very timid when faced with new people and new surroundings/situations. Maestro will need further training in all aspects of his life whilst settling into his new home including housetraining and general socialisation.

Previous experience with dogs is essential and we would like Maestro's new owners to live local to the centre which will allow for multiple visits prior to adoption."

    Geoff

    Geoff is a one-year-old domestic shortbread cat. Geoff didn't have the best start in his life, but the team at Preston Animal Centre have cared for him and he's now looking for his forever home.

    They said: "Geoff is our sweet and affectionate 1 year old Domestic Short hair male, who hasn't has the best start, but has taken everything in his stride since being in our care. Having come to us with abscess wounds on his head and neck, it's safe to say Geoff is more than content to have finished all his treatments & now be ready to find his forever home.

    Geoff is looking for his forever home © RSPCA "Geoff can have some initial uncertainty in situations, such as meeting new faces. He likes his hidey spaces in these instances, so it's important his new home can provide him with this when things get a bit too much. As long as you take introductions slow and steady, his confidence does really catch up with him really quickly, then he'll be comfortable enough to interact. Once he's spent that little bit of time with you, you'll really see how sweet this little lad is."

    Doris

    As you'll see from the pictures, Doris is extremely playful and fun. However, she had to be removed from her previous home because of bad living conditions and is now living at Preston Animal Centre waiting for her forever home.

    They said: "Doris is a social and affectionate girl who is confident with being handled and fussed she will vocalize and do as much as she can to get your attention, even standing on her back legs and rubbing her head against her pod door.

    Doris is very cheeky and playful © RSPCA "Even if you are new, she just wants fuss. Cuddles and fuss are a sure way to this girl’s heart. She is in her element when giving and receiving affection and this is a fantastic way to bond with her.

    She enjoys the feel of a good brush, purring lots in the process."

    Buddy

    Buddy is looking for a quiet forever home he can relax in. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier crossbreed is currently being cared for by the RSPCA Westmorland Branch but would love a place to call home.

Buddy is looking for a quiet home where he can be the only pet and the centre of his family. He is a super snuggly boy who truly believes he is a lap dog. He would prefer a rural home where he doesn't have to meet lots of other dogs. Buddy has been working on his intensity when aroubnd other dogs with the help of a behaviourist. This could be over come with more work. He is filled with staffy enthusiasm and loves his people. Do you have a Buddy sized gap on your sofa??"

    Star

    Despite being nine years old, Star is still very active and loves to play. The RSPCA West Cumbria Branch are looking for Star's forever home.

    They said: "Star is currently a little on the squidgy side but she loves her exercise, and we've already seen some of the extra weight melt away! She eats well, but does tend to bolt her food, so she needs a slow feeder. She can be a little wary of strangers, but it doesn't take her long to trust people.

    Star is still active for her age © RSPCA "Star's such a sweet girl, she travels well in the car, and walks nicely on the lead. She LOVES to play! And she isn't afraid to tell you it's playtime! As she's a small doggo escapologist she needs a properly secure garden, any tiny gaps and she's gonna squeeze through them."

    Ellie

    Ellie hasn't had a good few weeks and has found herself at the RSPCA Cumbria and North East Branch. This five-year-old was left to fend for herself when her owner moved away.

    The RSCPA said: "Ellie is a 5 yr old female white and tortie. She did not have a good previous few weeks as she was abandoned by her previous owner when she moved away and her son and herself had to look after themselves, with a concerned neighbour looking out for them and feeding them.

    Can you give Ellie a home? © RSPCA "We managed to catch her and she settled into the cattery, with her son joining her when we managed to catch him. However, it turned out that she was bullying him, so we moved him to another unit, but she is a lovely friendly girl that we wonder if she should just be the only cat in the home."

    Kittens

    Three kittens at the RSPCA West Cumbria Branch are now old enough to find their forever homes. There are two girls and a boy and ideally should go in pairs or to a home with another cat.

    The RSPCA said: "These sweet babies are searching for their furever homes! They're around 10 weeks old now and full of beans! There are 2 little girls and a little boy (main image).

    "Ideally, we'd want them to be adopted in pairs, or to a home with an existing cat or kitten.

    "They've started their vaccinations, are microchipped, and have been flea and worm treated. We cover the cost of their neuter once they're old/big enough."
